Principal Test Engineer

About this Role

As a Principal Test Engineer, you will use your enthusiasm and deep knowledge of modern testing practices to help us deliver high‑quality, resilient products on our modernised, cloud‑hosted platform.

You will provide leadership for testing within product teams, with a particular focus on post‑release quality, live validation, and in‑life testing. You’ll work closely with engineering, product, and operational teams to ensure quality is maintained beyond deployment and that issues in live environments are detected, understood, and addressed effectively.

The role covers both new and evolving services deployed in the cloud, working with modern service‑based architectures and data platforms. You will define and continuously improve our testing practices and ways of working, mentoring and coaching others to ensure consistently high standards across the organisation.

You will support project and product teams by leading the testing effort to ensure the ongoing delivery of high‑quality products and services for TransUnion through the application of professional testing techniques, knowledge, and best practices.



Key Responsibilities

• Own and evolve test processes and procedures, with a strong emphasis on post‑release and in‑life testing, ensuring approaches are effective, pragmatic, and risk‑based

• Collaborate closely with other Principal Test Engineers to ensure consistency of practice, tooling, and leadership across the Test Community

• Act as a subject matter expert for testing and quality, advising teams and stakeholders across TransUnion on effective approaches to assuring quality in modern, cloud‑based systems

• Optimise testing activities across all stages of delivery, including:

    • Pre‑release validation

    • Post‑release verification

    • Production issue analysis and prevention

• Provide leadership input into learning and development strategy, highlighting departmental needs and emerging industry trends to support organisational capability growth

• Contribute to the evolution of the Development Organisation Framework, including competencies aligned to modern testing, cloud platforms, and post‑release quality practices

• Support recruitment by:

    • Defining interview approaches and scenarios

    • Identifying capability gaps within the test function

    • Participating in the interview process

• Coach and mentor individual testers, supporting personal development plans and career progression

• Take on a leadership role within product teams, contributing to (and where appropriate leading) planning, scheduling, and design activities

• Work with stakeholders to define test strategies appropriate to the product, release approach, and operational risk, ensuring alignment with wider test community strategies

• Ensure clear and effective status reporting, keeping stakeholders informed of quality, risk, and test outcomes using appropriate forums and communication channels

Skills and Experience

• Proven commercial experience leading and influencing teams involved in testing activities

• Strong ability to motivate, coach, and inspire teams, introducing improvements through the adoption of modern best practices

• Commercial experience testing cloud‑deployed, service‑based systems within an agile development lifecycle

• Passion for quality excellence and delivering the right outcomes, with strong interpersonal and communication skills

• Clear ownership of problems through investigation, resolution, and preventative improvement

• A collaborative, whole‑lifecycle approach to testing, including post‑release and production‑focused quality activities

• Experience with test automation techniques and supporting frameworks

• Willingness and ability to learn new technologies, platforms, and testing approaches as practices evolve

• Experience working with business and technical stakeholders to advise, promote, and consult on testing principles and quality risk

• Experience with BDD / ATDD approaches

• Strong technical skills related to test automation

• Experience testing APIs and web services

• Experience with non‑functional testing, such as performance, load, security, and usability testing, particularly in live or production‑like environments
