Job DescriptionTo further develop the ocean product in the marketplace through focus on Operations, Finances, Sales, People, Systems, and Culture in adherence to the company’s policy and procedures.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Set the tone within your department
- Ensure and assist key staff with goal setting and monitoring.
- Conduct regular interviews with potential new personnel.
- Plan for and hold effective monthly department meetings with team; reviewing department goals and business plan periodically to ensure accountability.
- Review department goals and tactical business plan periodically with team to ensure buy-in and accountability.
- Ensure that message is being transmitted adequately and timely.
- Oversee the management of the branch ocean department.
- Lead Active Process Management to go from GOOD to BEST
- Create and maintain an effective department organization chart, which is designed for flexibility and growth
- Map and understand department process flow, constantly looking for areas of improved efficiency to offer customers better cycle times and service as well as controlling costs.
- Ensure all customers standard operating procedures are followed, documented and kept up to date in Customer SOP.
- Ensure that productivity and profitability goals for ocean department are met
- Monitor and improve key departmental productivity indicators
- Develop relationships with the "core" carriers
- Build and maintain strong relationships with vendors (shipping lines, trucking companies, and others)
- Develop joint local strategies with the carriers to ensure our account base is satisfied and our value to the carrier increases
- Regularly read and review business and trade journals and attend industry events to further market and industry knowledge.
- Assist District Manager with preparation of annual department budget.
- Responsible for Product P&L and growth.
- Ensure all invoicing is taking place in a timely manner and ensure accuracy at all times.
- Ensure company credit procedures are followed and utilized effectively.
- Manage intercompany accounting discrepancies.
- Promote compliance in diligently following all company policies and regulations and in being the role model of integrity and pride for your staff.
- Actively develop business for department through active involvement in sales and retention process and close coordination with sales and retention
- Work on developing a solid relationship with our customers, way ahead of when a problem occurs.
- Pro-actively provide pricing alternatives, routing solutions and technical assistance to clients through internal sales both regional and global.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four year college or university; or 4 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to define, develop and document business processes and procedures
- Effective interpersonal skills. Ability to relate to customers and employees at all levels.
- Experience with MS Windows, MS Office Products
- Strong market and competition knowledge
- Have a thorough understanding of local market pricing conditions
- Professional oral and written communication skills in English and native language
