Role Overview

We are expanding our Platform Engineering team with a Senior Software Engineer who thrives in deep systems work.

This role sits at the core of Nasuni’s NAS appliance platform—the Linux-based system that runs in customer environments across physical hardware, virtualized infrastructure, and cloud platforms.

This is a role for engineers who:

• Build and debug operating-system-level software.
• Understand storage and filesystem internals.
• Write production-grade Python as a primary development language.
• Enjoy diagnosing complex Linux and I/O issues in real-world deployments.

This role is not for application-only developers or infrastructure operators. It is for engineers who build and evolve system platforms.

Level & Scope

You will:

• Own design and implementation of subsystems within the NAS appliance platform.
• Design and develop Linux systems software in Python.
• Contribute to storage, upgrade, deployment, packaging, and lifecycle management components.
• Debug complex customer-reported issues across OS, storage, and virtualization layers.
• Influence architecture decisions within the platform domain.
• Collaborate with QA, Support, and Cloud teams to deliver appliance-grade reliability.

You operate with high autonomy within your domain and are accountable for production-grade outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain Linux systems software for the NAS appliance platform.
• Write production-quality Python code for system orchestration, automation, upgrade workflows, and platform services.
• Develop and maintain shell-based automation (Bash and similar scripting) for system provisioning, packaging, and operational tooling.
• Contribute to low-level integrations where C/C++ is required (preferred capability).
• Work with Linux internals including systemd, memory management, storage stack, networking, and security configurations.
• Optimize filesystem and I/O performance (XFS, ext4).
• Develop packaging and release mechanisms (rpm/yum or equivalent).
• Write and maintain automated tests using pytest and CI pipelines.
• Debug multithreaded and I/O-intensive production issues.
• Collaborate with Support on high-severity escalations.
• Use AI-assisted development tools responsibly to improve debugging efficiency, log analysis, and workflow automation while validating outputs rigorously.

Must-Have Qualifications

• 7–10 years of experience building Linux-based systems or appliance-grade software.
• Strong production-level Python development experience (primary language).
• Strong understanding of Linux internals: systemd, memory, storage, networking, security.
• Experience working with filesystems such as XFS or ext4.
• Experience debugging multithreaded and I/O-intensive systems.
• Hands-on experience packaging, deploying, or maintaining system-level software.
• Experience writing and maintaining shell scripts (Bash or equivalent) for system automation.
• Experience designing and executing automated tests using pytest or similar frameworks.
• Experience working in virtualized environments (ESX, KVM, Hyper-V, or similar).
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools in debugging or automation workflows with demonstrated ability to validate and verify outputs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with C or C++ in systems-level development.
• Experience integrating Linux systems with AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Familiarity with Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or CI/CD pipelines.
• Knowledge of networking protocols (TCP, UDP, HTTP).
• PostgreSQL experience in production systems.
• Experience contributing to open-source systems projects.

Ideal Qualifications

• Experience building storage platforms, File systems, or unstructured data systems.
• Experience developing appliance software deployed in customer-managed environments.
• Experience optimizing system performance at the OS or storage layer.
• Experience designing upgrade and lifecycle management mechanisms for distributed systems.

Experience Guidelines

• 7–10 years total industry experience in systems or platform engineering.
• At least 5+ years working deeply in Linux systems development.
• At least 4+ years of production Python development in system-level contexts.
