Job Function Description: 

As an Engineering Manager, you will play a crucial role in leading and mentoring a team of engineers while also providing technical guidance to ensure the successful delivery of high-quality software solutions. Your role requires a blend of strong technical expertise, excellent leadership skills, and a strategic mindset to drive the team towards achieving the company’s objectives. 

You will be responsible for:

  • Strong Technical Focus and Leadership: Dive into challenging technical issues, guide the team to tackle ambitious problems, and ensure our efforts deliver high-value impact.
  • Service Ownership and Development Best Practices: Take charge of maintaining and operating our team’s services, implementing development best practices to foster the production of high-quality, well-architected, and sustainable code.
  • Cross-Training and Feature Balance: Foster cross-training initiatives and maintain a healthy equilibrium between feature development and technical enhancements.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to junior engineers and offer guidance to senior contributors, maximizing their potential. 
  • Conduct regular performance reviews to assess and support engineers’ growth and development. 
  • Manage career development plans, ensuring alignment with individual and company goals. 
  • Commercial Insight and Stakeholder Communication: Utilize your interpersonal skills and commercial acumen to ensure team members understand the impact of their work on product delivery. Also, provide estimates for delivery to stakeholders.
  • Vision Alignment and Strategic Clarity: Clarify the team's vision, mission, and strategy, ensuring alignment with company objectives to avoid wasted efforts.
  • Collaboration with Product Owner: Collaborate closely with the Product Owner to comprehend and contribute to the product roadmap.
  • Agile Methodologies and Continuous Value Delivery: Employ Agile methodologies with the assistance of the Scrum Master to continuously deliver value to customers.
  • Cultivate a Culture of Continuous Improvement: Foster a culture of continuous improvement through retrospection, encouraging the team to reflect on past experiences and strive for ongoing enhancement.
  • Develop detailed project plans outlining key milestones, deliverables, timelines, and resource allocation. 
  • Ensure transparency by providing detailed reports on initiative status, including metrics, timelines, and any deviations from the plan. 
  • Provide feedback and input to VP and CTO to align initiatives with overall company strategy and vision. 
  • While this position does not require participation in an official on-call roster, Engineering employees are expected to be available to assist with troubleshooting Severity 1 or Severity 2 production issues as they arise. If contacted, employees should be prepared to respond and provide support, leveraging their domain knowledge and skills to resolve critical incidents.

  • Strong knowledge of software development and engineering practices. 
  • Proficiency in technical problem-solving and project management. 
  • Understanding of code quality and system performance. 
  • Solve medium to complex technical problems. 
  • Balance feature development with technical debt reduction. 
  • Manage engineering projects with moderate complexity. 
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams and stakeholders. 
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance. 
  • Communicate effectively within the team and with other departments. 
  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field. 
  • Development/System Engineering Expertise: Preferred minimum of 10+ years of hands-on experience in developing complex systems, preferably across full stack.
  • Proficiency in backend and frontend services as well as distributed systems.
  • Proficiency with Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS): Experience working with databases such as MSSQL, PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc.
  • Excellent Interpersonal Skills: A people person who can mentor, understand and inspire individuals and teams, fostering collaboration and teamwork.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD Principles: Solid understanding of Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery principles and practices, ensuring smooth software development and deployment processes.
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to operate strategically, from conception through continuous operation of 24x7 services. Capable of distilling complex and ambiguous situations into actionable plans for the team.
  • Agile Advocate: Advocate and practitioner of agile processes, emphasizing continuous integration and test automation to drive efficiency and productivity.
  • Delivery Focus: Delivery-focused individual who values curiosity, collaboration, and the development of others to ensure success within the team and organization.
